Funds Sought to Educate Borei Keila Children, Cambodia

SRP lawmaker Mu Sochua has appealed for funds to send 23 Borei Keila children, who were forcibly evicted from their homes earlier this months, to school.

The scholarship program, which is run by the Strey Khmer NGO, has so far received a $2,500 donation from a woman's advocacy group and aims to help educate the evicted Borei Keila  children living in poorly equipped relocation sites outside of Phnom Penh.

The 23 children, aged between 6 and 18, were part of hundreds of families evicted from the Borei Keila community by armed forces on Jan. 3. Dozens of protesters and police were injured in the clash over land that the government says belongs to the local conglomerate Phanimex.

"Since I started working on this issue and made an appeal on my blog and Facebook, we got $2,500 from Women Against Violence Everywhere (WAVE)," Ms. Sochua said Friday, adding that the money would be enough to educate the children for three months.

"But we want to look beyond three months, so that the children in at least 8th grade can complete school," she added.

Rights groups say that evictions in Phnom Penh have resulted in villagers being confronted with soaring unemployment, high school dropout rates, hunger and health problems, as well as exceptional levels of indebtedness.

"We want to provide scholarships for these students who have already been evicted and have had all their possessions destroyed, "Strey Khmer said in a statement explaining the school scholarship fund.

"Some students have been forced to drop out of school, while others are at-risk for dropping out due to financial struggles. Their families are struggling to secure food and housing, leaving little resources fro tuition costs."
